Vocational training in recognised occupations
Steilmann predominantly offers vocational training for industrial clerks . Every year, on 1 August, between 10 and 15 young people embark on a vocational training programme in this occupation.
The occupation of “industrial clerk” was restructured in 2003 and now comprises all the core business management functions of an industrial enterprise. Industrial clerks work in many overlapping functional areas, such as:
Vocational training plus college education model
A level holders who are interested in studying business management parallel to a vocational training programme as industrial clerk can take advantage of combining vocational training with the limited number of college places held available for Steilmann at the Post-Secondary Technical College for Economics and Management (FOM) in Essen. The business management course is seven semesters long (two semesters for the foundation course and four semesters for the main course, with individual emphases and a dissertation in the final semester) and graduates obtain the qualification of “Diplom-Kauffrau/Diplom-Kaufmann (FH)”.
The lectures are all held in the evenings and at weekends, which means that they do not conflict with the in-company training programme. The “vocational training plus college education” model is extremely time and work-intensive and demands a high level of commitment, motivation and discipline. Half of the course fees are paid by the trainee and half by Steilmann.
Information about the course (structure and curriculum, fees, etc.) is available on the Post-Secondary Technical College for Economics and Management’s website (FOM) at:

Applications procedure
Our vocational training programmes commence every year on 1st August. The selection procedure comprises several phases: aptitude test, group and individual interview. It begins from Oktober of the year prior to the commencement of the programme.
A complete set of application documents (cover letter, CV with photo, copies of the last two school reports, references relating to work experience, holiday jobs, temporary employment) can be sent in from 1.September onwards.
In-company training
Numerous in-house training measures supplement the regular vocational training programme, communicate sector-specific know how and school social skills:
The excellent examination results and professional competence of our former vocational trainees confirm the success of our vocational training philosophy.
Further activities
Internal trainee programme
In addition to permanent further training measures, such as computer courses, language courses, specialist vocational courses and study courses, motivated junior staff can also take part in an individual trainee programme after completing their in-house vocational training.
Environmental training measures
The environmental department is a centralised, company-wide department that is responsible for the success of our product-related and company environmental protection policy and coordinates all activities in this sphere.
In 1996, the Steilmann Group included an environmental clause in all its contracts of employment. It provides information about Steilmann’s environmental objectives at company and global level. The Environmental Management Manual and the Environmental Guidelines help company employees and trainees to integrate these objectives in their day to day work.
The environment department communicates current developments in the field of in-company environmental protection in regular, supplementary training measures.
In the field of research and development, the “Klaus Steilmann Institute for Innovation and the Environment” (KSI) supports the environmental department and provides seminars and workshops.
